Coronet Bay held its 16th Annual Fun Run/Walk on Sunday 3 November 2013. Over the years this event has attracted about 50 to 90 competitors annually from all over Victoria. Last year's fun run easily broke the previous record of 90 with an impressive 150 competitors taking part. Though numbers were down on last year due to the foul weather, nevertheless, 118 people registered, though one entry was not issued with a race number and showed no record of participating. The terrible weather caught everyone by surprise. While the bureau did forecast cold squally conditions to arrive early on race day, I don't think anyone was prepared for the hammering we got, considering conditions were excellent on the day before.
I arrived about 8:30am to see much of the setting up well underway. About eight of us attempted to assemble the time/number-keeper's tent and while we were doing so, a massive squall hit us without warning. We struggled to stabilise the tent as 40-50 knot winds threatened to rip it to shreds. Finally, we managed to dismantle the tent but by now we were thoroughly drenched. At this point I suggested calling off the event as conditions worsened. While David Mildenhall (Fun Run/Walk Coordinator), Frank Angarane (Bass Coast Shire Council's Events Coordinator) and I were deliberating about what to do, someone in the crowd yelled out saying that according to the weather pattern (as viewed on her mobile phone) finer conditions were on the way. Not wanting to disappoint the mass, we decided to continue on with proceedings in the hope of better weather to come.
The squally weather did eventually break just in time for the start, though it remained miserably cold and windy throughout the day. Towards the end of the run/walk the weather turned sour again and almost caused the abandonment of the event. But our marshals stood their ground until the last competitor crossed the finish.
We had one casualty on the day. A young girl collapsed part way through the course from hyperthermia. I am happy to report that she is okay.
I would like to thank all our sponsors, contributors and volunteers for supporting this event. Profits after expenses go to the Coronet Bay Combined Community Group for improvements to the facilities in the area for the benefit of residents and visitors of the waterline town of Coronet Bay.
Our major sponsor this year was Grantville Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank. Other contributors (in no particular order) who supported this event financially or in kind included Cailes Cabinets (scoreboards kits), Bass Coast Shire Council (setup requirements), Alex Scott Real Estate (printing requirements and promotional signage), Cargills Sports Store, Westernport Water (mobile water station), Eden Racing, Westernport Roadlines, Schellekens Agricultural Contracting, Bass Coast Seeds Supplies, Corinella Boarding Kennels, Tompsett Towers B&B, Bass River Motors, The Bass Valley News, George Bass Hotel, Coronet Bay General Store, Eden Racing, Yogi Bear’s Mowing & Gardening Service, Corinella General Store, Bass Valley Primary School, Grantville Bendigo Bank, Barmazter, French View Caravan Park, Grantville Garden Supplies, Seaside Fish & Chips, Crisp Café, Happenin’ Hair & Beauty, True Blue Signs, Bass Valley Lions Club, Grantville Pharmacy, Mitre 10 Grantville, Maru Koala & Animal Park, Denham’s Tyer & Battery Service, Hair Doo’s & Don’ts, Lang Lang Opportunity Shop, National Vietnam Veterans Museum, San Remo Bakehouse, Water View Pizza, Murray Watson and Cath Woods.
