The 2014 Coronet Bay Fun Run/Walk, its seventeenth, got off to another squally start last Sunday. The decision to change venues for this annual event and move further inland, from the unpredictable elements of the foreshore reserve to the comfort of the community hall, proved a worthy safeguard to the unpredictable weather. Come the start, conditions had improved considerably as 93 keen competitors took to the new challenging course, with two sections, that of 3km and a bit over 5km.
With some further refinements to a new scoring system introduced three years ago and having the added advantage of the hall, this year’s event ran like clockwork, much to the delight of the organisers. But the key to its overall success undoubtedly was the support of the many volunteers. These included members from the Corinella and Grantville/Glen Alvie CFA along with enthusiastic residents willing to help, without all of whom this fabulous community event simply could not run.

As the Event Coordinator, firstly I would like to thank David Mildenhall (Event Publicity Officer) who worked tirelessly to raise many hundreds of dollars for the community and secondly to Margot Taylor (Coronet Bay Combined Community Groups Fun Run/Walk's Liaison Officer) who is always there when you need her. Margot sourced most of the volunteers and organised a great spread of food and drink for everyone. And I cannot forget Janine Temme and Frank Agarane (Bass Coast Shire Council) who backed me all the way in ensuring that the event was conducted as efficiently and as safely as possible. Speaking of whom, on the morning of the event, due to the squally conditions, I needed some more tape to repair some directional signs around the course. Just as my tape ran out, who should turn up? A voice could be heard in the distance. "Is there anything you need," yelled Frank. "Duct tape," said I. Always at the ready, Frank replied, "Here you go, duct tape! And never fear, Janine, my ghostly shadow roaming nearby, was scouting the course to make sure it was safe.
All the entrants enjoyed some after-race refreshments in the community hall. One such family, Craig Rice, his wife and son from Kew, had not run a race of any kind since 1998. Craig said he did no training for the event but managed to complete the 5km cross-country course in the commendable time of 38 minutes 14 seconds, running 4km and walking 1km.
I would further like to thank our major sponsor, the Grantville & District Community Bank branch of the Bendigo Bank, other generous contributors, including the Bass Coast Shire Council, Alex Scott Real Estate (Grantville), Eden Racing (Corinella), Westernport Water, Grantville Medical Centre, Cargills Sports Store (Wonthaggi) and Artfusion Studio and Gallery (Anderson).
For their support financially and/or in kind a further mention must go to (in no particular order) Grantville Garden Supplies, La Provincia (Corinella), Mitre 10 Grantville, French View Caravan Park (Grantville), Bass Coast Seeds Supplies, Crisp Bar (Grantville), Grantville Pharmacy, Corinella Boarding Kennels, Maru Koala & Animal Park (Grantville), Seaside Fish & Chips (Grantville), Dorothy McKay Civil Celebrant, Bassine Specialty Cheeses (Bass), Yogi Bear's Lawn Mowing & Gardening Service, Connells Bakery (Wonthaggi and Bass), Bass River Motors (Bass), Garage Art (Bass), Bass Valley Primary School, The Sentinel Times, Coronet Bay General Store, Corinella General Store and Tru Blue SIgns (Grantville).
These contributions all go towards helping make this event an ongoing success and it also enables improvements to be made to the flora and facilities in the Coronet Bay area.
